I believe at the time of the recording Bruce was ill - and the studio was already booked!

GuitarPhil wrote:On the versions without strings that I have Hank starts the tune by playing a double hit on the high E string, 10th fret but on the version I have with strings (The Shadows Classic Hits Disc 1) it's just a single note - so it's not quite a note-for-note version :o . The tone is also different - not as bright on the strings version.

Phil.

The "double note" phenomenon is a digital mastering error, originated by EMI UK in the 1990s on the CD version of the double album "The Original Chart Hits 1960 - 1980", but not on the vinyl version of that release (which I also have). The error has been replicated on some other EMI and third party releases, presumably by means of cloning from the first CD to feature it.

Here's the way it appears in my record collection (from the database):

THEME FOR YOUNG LOVERS (Welch) (EMI version)
1964; EMI/Columbia (UK) Single A-side (c/w "This Hammer"); DB 7231 (mono)

1. Single A-side - 45 EMI/Columbia (UK) DB 7231 (mono)
2. "More Hits!" - LP EMI/Columbia (UK) 33SX 1791 (mono) (2 copies)
3. "Those Brilliant Shadows" - EP EMI/Columbia (UK) SEG 8321 (mono)
4. "20 Golden Greats" - LP EMI (UK) EMTV 3 (stereo)
5. "The Shadows At The Movies" - LP EMI/MFP (UK) MFP 50347 (stereo)
6. "The Original Chart Hits 1960 - 1980" - LPx2 EMI (UK) EM 1354 (stereo)
7. "The Early Years" - CDx6 EMI (UK) CD SHAD 14 (stereo)
8. "The Original Chart Hits 1960 - 1980" - CDx2 EMI (UK) CD EM 1354 (stereo) [w.glitch]
9. "Wonderful Life"/"Aladdin And His Wonderful Lamp" - CDx2 EMI (UK) 7 80426 2 (stereo)
10. "A Portrait Of The Shadows" - CD Castle Comms (D) CHC 7096 CR (stereo) [w.glitch]
11. "Dance On !!!!" - CD Laserlight (D) 16 090 (stereo)
12. "30 All Time Greatest Hits" - CD EMI (Australia) 8 14898 2 (stereo) [w.glitch]
13. "More Hits!" - CD EMI (UK) CDP 792424 2 (stereo)
14. "More Hits!" (mono/stereo) - CD EMI (UK) 578199 2 (mono)
15. "More Hits!" (mono/stereo) - CD EMI (UK) 578199 2 (stereo)

It's interesting that the CD version of "Wonderful Life/Aladdin" does not have the glitch. Presumably, the whole archive master tapes of the two LPs were used to create separate digital re-masters, ignoring other digital masters already available for some of the tracks.

The correct version has the five-note introductory phrase, the glitched recording appears to have six.

Thanks for your kind offer Ritchie - I've had a UB copy for some years, but it's just that I'm in the throws of doing some recording with the band, and as explained earlier, I was sure there was some orchestration on the original, so I wanted to listen to what the keyboards would need to do, only to find there was no orchestration on any of my copies of the original EMI tracks! Of course like so many, I've got used to hearing it with orchestration, so perhaps I need to do two versions......?
