Didnt Russ Ballard write " The Lost City" ? Why the Shads did this an an album track I will never understand, it should have been a single release!

The Roulettes: From Wikipedia:

Brian Parker - guitar (born 1940, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire)
John Rogers - bass guitar (until May 1963 when he was killed in a car crash) Hertfordshire
John 'Mod' Rogan - bass guitar 1963 - 1967 (born 3 February 1944, Hartlepool, County Durham)
Peter Thorpe - rhythm guitar (born 25 May 1944, Wimbledon, South London)
Bob Henrit - Drums (born Robert John Henrit, 2 May 1944, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire)
Russ Ballard - lead guitar (born Russell Glyn Ballard, 31 October 1945, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire)

John Rogers had played bass with The Hunters. Brian Parker (also subsequently with Unit 4 +2) was also with The Hunters and his Jazzmaster was originally the one owned by Bruce.

Mike Steed, who plays bass with our occasional instro band, The Instro-Mentals, knows Bob Henrit well. Apparently he (Bob) also played on The Hunters' The Storm)* and also lived next door to Cliff in Cheshunt! Bob later became a member of Argent.

Martin.

* I've just verified this fact from The Hunters CD - he in fact played tympanis.

I remember seeing The Roulettes on TV when they backed Adam Faith for a series of shows. They also had a regular solo spot and this sometimes featured 'Whispering' Peter Thorpe on lead rather than rhythm duties. In my opinion he was a vastly underrated player, as he had a lovely style, sound and touch, using a Strat to very good effect if I remember rightly.

That's interesting Paul, I got to know Pete in '65 and he had some interesting guitars including a Black Fender Strat, a Gretsch Country Gent & a sunburst Gibson J200! He was a great player himself although he was the rhythm guitarist in the Roulettes, Amongst other things he introduced me to the music of Chet Atkins. and could play in the Chet style very competently. On the instrumental tracks The Roulettes recorded where Russ Ballard played electric piano, Pete played the 'lead' guitar parts.
He was very helpful and encouraging to the young band I was in - a really, really nice guy. Haven't seen him for more than 10yrs now...it's about time got in touch.
I also hadn't realised Martin, that Russ had written The Lost City - that's an interesting Shads connection. I do remember Pete telling me that they'd done the instrumental backing for Unit 4 + 2's 'Concrete & Clay', and if my memory serves me right the two who wrote that track also wrote 'The Long Cigarette' that The Roulettes recorded (and The BBC wouldn't air...). I stand to be corrected on that, but I'm fairly sure.

I just popped across to Amazon (via the handy link on this page) and ordered the Roulettes CD. The reviews were excellent so I'm looking forward hearing it. Thanks for the recommendation!

The last one on Ebay went for over £ 700, mine is in near mint condition in fact I do not think it has been played more than once
as I always used to record them onto cassette tape for the car when I bought new albums
The reason it is so rare is that it did not sell very well on it's original release
