Nivram... not Gretsch... not Strat... not Burns...

Nivram on Rickenbacker! This is an old sound file and many of the older members know it , but there are a lot of new members here, so I thought I'd post it on this new site. I found a very ordinary midi BT and improved upon on it as much as I could; I did the recording, mixing, sound engineering, processing . . . in fact, I do everything here except play the guitar (which, by the way is also mine -- a Rickenbacker 340/6JG), a distinction that goes to a friend of mine called Roka. The sound file was initially an experiment to see whether the Rick (which is not known as a very versatile guitar) was versatile enough for Shadows music. You decide.

Boing, after listening to Ecca for a number of years I have come to the conclusion that you can play ANYTHING on ANYTHING. And, given it's played with that feel and passion it'll sound good.

Cheers, Alan.

The version obviously doesn't follow the original and wasn't meant to I guess. But it has great tone, style and is really well played. I personally do not feel that every Shads number has to sound exactly like the Shads. That is a great rendition in its own right. It may not be a Gretsch or a Strat but the tone seems pretty close to whatever was used on the original. It certainly doesn't sound like a Burns though, to my ears anyway. Len

I think its the nicest sound I've heard off a Rick so far. Dont remember such a sweet warm sound out of any other recording by one. Well done.
I think Nivram is made to be played whatever way the guitarist so desires. I made up a bt last night which in no way follows the Shads version. I tried to make it as jazzy as possible with a piano bass and drums backing. I do a few key changes in it.
I find it inspires me to think up loads of riffs to beef it up a bit.

I agree with you Alan . . . I think Ecca's Nivram is the most original version I have heard.

Len, the original was played on a Gretsch, and this version was played on a Rickenbacker.

Bluesnote, I agree that it's a great sound. The Rick has high gain single coil pickups. Usually it's sound is rather percussive, particularly when fitted with flatwounds, which I normally have on it. But on this occasion I put D'Addario roundwounds, and I think they sounded great! But I have to say that Roka's playing was also a factor of the sound being so sweet. But that said, the Rick is a very classy guitar and is capable of equally classy sounds.

Thanks for your comments guys!!

I should have added that the guitarist did a wonderful job of the piece too 8-)
He's a really clean player, his music flows.

Where can I find Ecca's version?

A very nice clean fresh version of Nivram - I really enjoyed the playing and the tremolo sound.
Normally you associate this song with a bass guitar solo, but it sounded great without it.
Very well played and produced.

Try here Hugh.

I'm almost certain that this was done with a Gibson Les Paul. ( And possibly a Marshall 401 ). But I'm not sure about that.

There's an outside possibility that Jimmy Edwards was involved halfway through.

The man himself will tell you if you ask him.

Cheers, Alan.
