Hi Richie,
I prefer the 18 rather than a 20 for the reasons i mentioned previously, the set comes with a 24 w for the 3rd string so you have to buy the 18s seperately, these strings are also round core and not hex so a bit less tension when tuned to pitch so you have a bit of mass but with playability.
For the old nos strat its 13, 17, 26, 36, 46, 56, either Newtones or DRs, again roundcore, high action and whack em hard !

I think tutorials are fraught with the danger of some negativity from some Ritchie and not everybody will agree with / like your interpretation of a tune, take for example your recent posting of my Sliders demo playing the F/City on another site as you were commenting on me playing a bit of shadoogie or something, a little bird told me of this that one minute it was there, then it was gone, there was no problem with you listing it on the site as you may have thought , just a problem with keeping it on there ( lol ) ,ask where it went , see what answer you receive , get my drift ?

all i will say is if i said anything out of place phil on youtube forums what ever i send you my deepest apologise. and the reason the post of your sliders video was there then not was because when i posted it up it did not show up correctly on charlies site and i couldnt understand why so i thought if i cant see it other members wont so i deleted it. but from what your saying it ovbiously did show up

I use a wound G on mine on set of 12's and I find adjusting the height of the bridge saddle for the G is needed to get the required response

hi when you say you ajust the bridge saddle height wich way up or down?
and this ballances out the volume with the other strings yes?

It's odd but I tend to go up a bit rather than down.. If you think about it the G polepiece is lower on PU's using wound G so it might make sense however adjust till the volume is OK and as Phil Kelly mentioned a high action overall. The top three strings need good volume and projection so I tend to raise them a bit more than the bass end but not much and your ear should tell you when the balance is about right ... keep tweaking till you find the right setup with a 1/4 turn here and there till they all ring out right in the Shads numbers and the PU heights are also needed to get the right balance as well. Not to mention the trem floating point and intonation ... good luck !

another option charlie hall said i could try is getting a thicker gauge string like maybe a 26w as im using 12-52 12 16 24w 32w 42w 52w but no thicker

Hi everyone,
I to prefer a wound g string, and the only make which seems to be stocked locally is Dean Markley which I find excellent. You get a .020W plus a 0.18 plain in the same packet. I have just replaced a set of srtings with a different well known make and I am for ever retuning them through stretching.
The shop was kind enough to substitute the plain for a wound from a different made and told me he is being asked to do this on a regular basis as wound G's are getting very popular.

I'm with you Steve.

I have Dean Markley 11-52 sets on both of my electric guitars- using the wound .20 third- and as you say, these sets also come with an extra plain .18 third too.

In the past, I used to buy a regular 10-52 set and have to buy a separate .20 wound string to get a wound third of suitable gauge to match the set.

A major additional bonus is that I can get the DM sets for $AUS10 locally, about 6 quid!

I also think that whilst 13 -56 give a wonderful full solid tone, they are bloody hard work, unless you set up your action pretty low with a pretty straight neck relief!

At least it's still possible to bend 11-52 strings with a wound .20 without excessive pain and suffering!
