Well what you said about the Abba tribute band speaking in Swedish accents and being 'tongue in cheek' is OK as they are obviously having a larf, but I have had several folks who have met J.J. and they seriously believe that HE believes that he's the 'real deal'. As the shrink in Fawlty Towers once quipped, "there's a full conference there". ;)

Hi,

I attended the show at Zaandam about 10 days ago and, in my view, if one wants to experience today how it was (and sounded like) an early Cliff& Shadows show, I doubt it can get better than this. Whether Jimmy matches perfectly Cliff's voice or not for me is pointless. Cliff himself doesn't sound like he did 50 years ago. Similarly, in the tour last year (at least on the DVD) one could notice that Hank's guitar tone today, even when playing early hits, is not the same that we hear on the original recordings, though it sounds equally superb. It's just different.

I would also like to highlight Colin's performance, absolutely brilliant. We are privileged that he has devoted his gift of music to play our music.

Cheers,
Ramon.

Ramon, thanks for posting what I wanted to say as well! Whether Jimmy stays in character or not is wholly irrelevant--it's all ENTERTAINMENT, folks! Either you feel you've been given value for money or not. Me, I'm glad there's an act (and others) flying the flag for Cliff and The Shads. More power to 'em, I say!

Maybe I have mentioned this before but several years ago I went along to the Floral Pavilion (New Brighton) to watch Jet Harris, John Leyton ??Mike Berry?? and The Rapiers. The playing of the Lead Guitarist was nothing less than excellent and his Shadoogie is identical to the original on the 'Out of the Shadows LP. In fact I think HBMs modified version of same is not as good as original. Saying that, why can't these guitarists perform without trying to 'Look like' the man himself. I think the whole 'horn rimmed glasses' think is demeaning and takes away from the performance. There is only one HBM and there wiill never be another. Further, living your life in the shadow (pardon the pun) of another is a little strange.

Can't seem to find 'Shadoogie' on my 'Out Of The Shadows LP. I do have it on an album called 'The Shadows' though.

Actually, Colin has told me he's always used that style of glasses, for what it's worth. Again, it's so trivial a matter it's not worth raising an eyebrow over, compared with the great music that we get to hear.

Unfortunately I have been forced to wear specs for the last twenty five years without having any choice in the matter. Because of the two yearly eye testing and the fashion changes, I have worn almost every style available that suited me in that time - not because I needed to look like HBM.
John Lennon was wearing horn rimmed specs before long Marvin hit the headlines and eventually refused to wear his because he thought it was uncool - because of the emergence of The Shadows. Now if you want to argue about the influence Lennon had in the big scheme of things compared to Hank, bring it on.

Hi Dave

I always thought that Hank's style of glasses was down to Buddy Holly.
