I know we've been through this before, but would this be about right (never mind maple vs. rosewood Strats) . . . Please make necessary corrections.

Very interesting Bojan, thank you!

So on which numbers did Hank play the Antoria and Selmer amp, before he got the Strat and AC15? And did Bruce play the Vega and/or the Grimshaw then and later behind Hank's Strat before Bruce got the Jazzmaster and Telecaster?? Apart from a few instrumentals like Jet Black and Chinchilla, I suppose any other pre-Strat recordings would have been Cliff's songs?

That pre- Apache era fascinates me, because there were no Fenders nor echo units being used then...and Jet still used his Framus basses..

(I also enjoyed watching old You tube clips of Lonnie Donegan live, with his lead player using just a big body Hofner archtop with just a pickup screwed on it, no controls, played through a small Selmer amp! I like basic primitive gear!)

So guys, do you think my list is about accurate in terms of guitars/amps the Shads used for recording these songs? We can be fairly sure about most of them, but I have always wondered about a few. For example, was Dance On recorded through an AC15 or AC30? And what about Some Are Lonely? And what about South of the Border?. Also, in Fandango, did Hank use a Strat or a Burns? And did he use a Strat or a Burns in Theme for Young Lovers? It could go either way, because these guitars can sometimes sound very similar.

The absence of anything so far by Jim N can only mean that his typing on this topic has overheated his keyboard and he's waiting for it to cool down. In the mean time, dare I enquire about the inclusion of Nivram as a Strat number since even HM has mentioned that he used a Gretsch?

Dance On: recorded November or December 1962 (released before Christmas that year) - Hank had been using one or more AC30s (with top-boost on the back-panel) for over a year by then. The AC30 with added TB is described in the 1961 book "The Shadows By Themselves".

Some Are Lonely: recorded 19th December 1961 (it features Jet and Brian). That would have been an AC30 with added TB as well.

South Of The Border: recorded 12th April 1962. Probably the last Shads recording to feature Jet Harris. AC30 + TB.

Fandango: recorded 14th February 1964. Features John Rostill. Probably an AC30 with integral TB by this time (The Shadows always got relevant new Vox gear first as a priority). Almost certainly a Burns Marvin, which had been in use for studio work for some time by then.

Of course Ray, your point is valid . . .

Thanks Phil and Jim . . . So, how far back would you guys say the AC30 went? I would be genuinely surprised to know that Spring Is Nearly Here, Cosy, Perfidia, Tales of a Raggy Tramline, Sweet Dreams was recorded with AC30 :o :o . . . in fact, was Wonderful Land recoded using a AC30 or AC15?

Hi Bojan,
spring, cosy ,perfidia, raggy t, sweet d ,wonderful land, all ac30 , 4 input or 6 input is debateable , i would have thought the 1st 5 nos are ac30 / 6 input, the tv front ac34 was available early / mid 1960 so w/land could be either , both amps can deliver the w / land tone so who knows ?
regards,
Phil.
