It did occur to me that, although Cliff made quite a few mistakes, and sheepishly handed the guitar back to Hank, he had every right to have a go on it, seeing as he PAID for it!!!

Definitely blonde.

All standard Telecasters were marketed as "blonde" right up until the 1982 introduction of the Vintage Reissue series, when the 1952 VR Telecaster was deliberately finished in an aged blonde which Fender termed - for the first time - "butterscotch", in a nod to the terminology which had grown up in the vintage guitar market (cf. also "veneer-board", "slab-board", "mint-green" - none of which were of Fender's coinage).

Fender also tinted the neck finish on the VR models (all of them) in an effort to suggest age. The original guitars from the 1950s and 1960s had a pale untinted finish on the necks and headstocks which made them really stand out when viewed alongside other makers' versions of Fender-style guitars.

I've never been sure about that. To me, that looks like a scratch on the photo negative (not as uncommon as you might think).

It really is difficult to say what the actual colour of the Tele is from that photo. I too have checked my album cover & it could maybe a form of see-through blonde like my new Squier Classic Vibe '50s Tele, or maybe even an Olympic White, which is more of a Cream shade than White.

Me too. I can only see a bit of string ...... or a blemish on the photo print ? The leather guitar strap looks nice & clean & brand new, which it would be if it had just come from a shop.

From the first time I came across this wonderfully irrelevent piece of minutiae and looked at the EP cover, it seemed to me that the object in question was the square of card hanging down between the chair leg and the hi-hat stand.

My scan obviously gets less clear when I increase the magnification, but when the picture is viewed as a whole it seems likely that this is one of those cards that says 'Thank you for purchasing this quality Fender product' or something similar. The piece of string hanging loosely from the strap button at the bottom has, agreed, probably had the UK price tag torn from it.

If only we could go back in time, can you imagine the incredulity at that photo shoot if the group were told that fifty years later people would be having deep and meaningful discussions about a piece of string! (Mind you, if Jet or Bruce are having one of their peeks into this forum they are probably thinking the same thing right now!)

(Oh, and by the way, why was there an out-of-focus hi-hat stand left in the foreground when the picture was set up?)

I 've often thought that it's an urban myth about the price tag. I can tell you that the 'string' or whatever it is hanging from the strap button isn't a scratch on the negative because it also appears on the French ten inch version of the LP, which has a slightly different picture from that photo session.

The piece of string itself is still there - with the price tag removed as noted by Detective inspector Liffen (well done that man!). My own take on it is that, thinking back such a long time, the Shads recalled that the guitar was so new that it still had the price tag on it when they took it along to the photo session. Probably it did - then someone unspecified decided to remove it.

Rob :)
