1. 27 / 12 / 58 (Saturday Club): Move It / My Babe / Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On / Summertime Blues / Baby I Don't Care / High Class Baby

2. 14 / 3 / 59 (Saturday Club): Baby I Don't Care / Steady With You / Danny / Down The Line / Apron Strings

3. 18 / 4 / 59 (Saturday Club): C'Mon Everbody / Steady with You / Ready Teddy / Apron Strings / Never Mind / Danny / Don't Bug Me Baby

4. 20 / 6 / 59 (Saturday Club): Mean Streak / Dream Lover / It's Me And I'm In Love Again / Rip It Up / Living Doll

5. 5 / 9 / 59 (Saturday Club): Mean Woman Blues / Blue Moon / Apron Strings / Here Comes Summer / It's Me And I'm In Love Again / Living Doll

6. 24 / 10 / 59* (Saturday Club): Dynamite / It's Me And I'm In Love Again / Twenty Flight Rock / Pointed Toe Shoes / Heart Of Stone / Travelling Light

Show no.6 was a live broadcast from the studio - all of the others were pre - taped. Versions of Apron Strings / Down The Line / Living Doll were also transmitted from a show called "Funny Side Up" in August 1959 - but Bernie Andrews wasn't involved.

The Shads* / Drifters tracks were as follows (the initial number refers to the shows previously referred to)

1. "Guitar Boogie" / 2. "Jet Black" / 5. "Jet Black" / 6. "Jet Black"*

I say roll on 2011 (when 1960 will be out of copyright) - because the Shadows recorded 36 tracks for the BBC in 1960 and 22 of those were for Saturday Club.

Best wishes,

Rob :D

The dates you mention above, are those of the actual recording of the tracks or transmission dates?

Those were the transmission dates. For Saturday Club the sessions were always recorded on the preceding Tuesday.

Best wishes,

Below is from Rollercoaster Records site, Due out 18th October with a 25 track CD to follow

Cliff Richard: Let Me Tell You Baby, Its Called Rock'n'Roll (LP)
[ROLL 2026] £9.00

Let Me Tell You Baby – Its Called Rock’n’Roll! Cliff Richard & The Drifters (ROLL 2026). Due for release on Rollercoaster Records on October 18th is a UK ‘first’ … a ten-inch/25cm vinyl LP by Cliff Richard and The Drifters (the group was later re-named The Shadows to avoid confusion with the US Drifters). The LP contains recordings which have not been heard since they were first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme’s Saturday Club show in 1958. In these recordings we hear Cliff and his at their rockin’ best, long before he became an all-round entertainer. The music was wild, sexy, and demonstrated that at last British rock’n’rollers could compete with the American originals. Cliff had it all, slicked-back hair, sideburns, pink jacket … and a great voice. The Drifters, although they were learning fast as they rocked along, also had what was needed to give British teenagers what they craved – real live rock’n’roll. Saturday Club’s producer, Jimmy Grant, was impressed and booked Cliff as soon as he heard his first single, “Move It” Repeat appearances resulted, and the audience requests multiplied until Cliff soon held the weekly most-requested spot that had regularly been held by his idol, Elvis. The early recordings were often hurriedly made to a strict studio budget and even broadcast live from Manchester and Birmingham while Cliff and his group were on tour, but they remain superb examples of spontaneity and youthful enthusiasm . Fortunately, Saturday Club employed the talents of engineer and producer Bernie Andrews, which guaranteed superb quality recordings and also ensured that most of these broadcasts were preserved rather than being discarded, as was then BBC policy. Tracks on the album are as follows: Side One: DYNAMITE! MOVE IT HIGH CLASS BABY DON’T BUG ME BABY APRON STRINGS Side Two: NEVER MIND MEAN STREAK RIP IT UP READY TEDDY GUITAR BOOGIE .....A CD version of the album will follow later this year and will contain twenty-five tracks, all from the same era. Meanwhile Rollercoaster’s renowned superb high-fidelity sound and artwork make this album a must both for fans of Cliff Richard and rock’n’roll collectors in general. It’s Dynamite!

This product will be in stock on Monday 18 October, 2010.

Quite a clever way of marketing. First a limited edition 10" LP of mouth-watering material and then the announcement of an extended twenty-five track CD, with yet no mention of the tracklisting. This will mean most people, who are interested, will buy the 10" LP and the CD. But this is just me moaning, which doesn't mean that much. I am very glad these recordings will finally see the light of day!

I'm hopeful that virtually all of the recordings (39) will be covered - viz: 10" LP (10 tracks), CD (25 tracks) = 35 tracks. As the Drifters / Shads recorded 3 versions of "Jet Black" - then it's possible that John Beecher might select the best of the three. Also - especially as some of the tracks were live and very raw - I recall John Beecher mentioning a few years ago that one or two of the performances were extremely ragged and full of mistakes and that he wouldn't want to reissue those particular tracks (this was when the BBC / EMI release was still a very faint possibility). So - one or two 'substandard' performances and a couple of "Jet Blacks" may go by the board - which would leave 35 tracks. This is all just a speculative 'educated' guess on my part.

Best wishes,

Rob :D

Hi,

This set has nothing to do with the Rollercoaster release. Both CDs feature the well-known tracks from 1959 and 1960 as they were released at that time.
