Well, "The Indian Doctor" certainly had Dance On! playing over the trailers but wether that's the theme tune I don't know.

I don't watch daytime TV as a matter of principle, so I'll be givign it a miss!

Peter, it was a light hearted comment with a certain amount of personal experience!

I retired three years ago and lead a very active life involving music among other things. I was determined not to get dragged into the breakfast/daytime TV culture, preferring to listen to the radio in the background when it doesn't interfere with the music!
When my dad retired he had loads of hobbies such as photography, motor bikes etc, but within three months he had succumbed to daytime TV (because my mum watched it) and lost interest in everything else. My wife say that when they came to visit during the day, the timing was such that he wouldn't miss an episode of his favoruite programmes!!!

I just don't want to go down the same route!!!!!!!!

thanks for reply jim. i thought you meant something like that. it is something i feel simlarly about. and as i may start to cut back on work soon i to dont want to go down that route. if thats what people want thats fine. i find myself asking all sorts of question about retirment ect as i find i have mixed feeling about it, some good and some make me nervous. have to keep the brain in gear. i am looking forward to cutting back the work load and have given how to use the extra time a lot of thought. thanks again peter

Although not a current TV show, what about the theme from 'Bergerac'?

Nice tasteful guitar with echo for the main melody theme, an accordian giving a French touch reflecting the Anglo- French locale of the show, and a gentle reggae beat..

Another good old theme was that used for 'Callan'...listen to those very heavy gauge flatwounds on a great moody dark minor key melody...was it dear old Bert on that session, I wonder?

I agree with captainhaddock. The best theme tunes were from that golden era of the 1960s and 70s. I never get tired of listening to the themes to The Sweeney, The Persuaders!, The Professionals, Jason King, etc... And let's not forget the amazing compositions of Barry Gray -- Thunderbirds, UFO, Stingray, Captain Scarlet etc... The US themes from those eras were unforgettable too; Mission: Impossible, The Rockford Files, Star Trek, Starsky & Hutch, Ironside, Hawaii 5-0 to name but a few.

When I was a kid, I would record all my favourites by sticking a microphone in front of the TV speaker! Got a couple of cassettes full of classics, recorded off air at the time! Anyone remember Planet of the Apes, Hong Kong Phooey, Logan's Run, Screen Test??? Ah, those were the days!!!! The very first record I ever bought was a TV Themes LP, Children's TV Themes by Cy Payne (I think!!!). Then all the usual suspects of that era, The TV Times Record of TV Themes by Jack Parnell and The Detectives by John Gregory. For me, I'm afraid, the era of the truly brilliant TV theme is long since gone, although there are some good ones and some talented people around today. The likes of Brian Bennett, Alan Hawkshaw, Francis Monkman and Steve Gray were responsible for some of the best, which is why I wish more of them were easily available on CD.

But to return to the original question; what is the best current TV theme music. Well, there's only one possible contender, isn't there? Despite it's present appalling arrangement...DOCTOR WHO by Ron Grainer.

As I work shifts I do get to some daytime TV and alot of it is much better than the stuff they serve up in an evening on the BBC and ITV - such as Eastenders/Emmerdale and Corrie! Alibi have a great series on -"The Murdoch Mysteries" High quality production and excellent actors! A canadian production! :D

I think you'll find that "New Tricks" was written by Warren Bennett!

The tune for Golf on BBC is by Brian Bennett - can't remember the title though!
