Its a line either printed or drawn, usually on paper - some of us may remember parchment- where one scribes or scribbles -if its a legal document- ones personal identification mark. Some of us here may use a X !
This drawn line helps to keep the signature straight and true, and hence came the saying -" He knows where to draw the line"
