In Every Ford

Postby Marcelo » 29 Jul 2011, 05:36

Hello friends!

Here is my arrangement and rendition about an original sung tune by the american group His Name Is Alive (artists from 4AD record label).

Backing track was made by me playing all instruments except percussions played by Ricardo Bianchi using a Roland Octapad SPD-20 and a real tambourine.

The guitar is a D’angelico New Yorker with Bigsby tremolo model. Here I also used a Line 6 Pod XT.

Here is the link:

Please, give it a listen.

Regards,
Marcelo.

Hi Marcelo

I've listened to one of your other soundfiles, You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me, which I thought was beautifully and expressively, played. It made a great instrumental and you really got the best out of it.

The problem I have with In Every Ford is that I don't think the tune is good enough to make a nice instrumental and, no matter how well played, the actual melody is too fragmented and dull. In short, it doesn't do justice to you. I hate to post negative comments, especially about a talented guitarist, but I do like your playing, just don't like the tune.

All best

Hello Noel!

Thank you, friend!

I'm happy to know your reaction that for me is positive because is honest and sincere from you, and I understand your objections that objectively point about what a round guitar instrumental should be in concept, and I agree that this one probably walks on other direction.

Athough this, it made me happy to play this one and I took as a challenge trying to fit this melody in a guitar instrumental format.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Marcelo.

Hi Marcello

I agree. There are some tunes that I play purely for myself because I enjoy the challenge of playing them and (sometimes!) getting them right.

All best

The best for you, too Noel!

Have you noticed the coincidence? The song is Ford, you are Ford and we got meeting each other by this song.

Regards,
Marcelo.

Yes, of course, and I really wish I liked that tune more! But that's the great thing about music, different things appeal to different people and so there is always something for everyone, and I see from the posts on Charlie Hall's forum that I am in the minority on this one!

Forgot to mention - that's a really nice looking (and sounding) guitar you have there.

Cheers

For me the sound is good and I enjoyed the main part of the tune too. The stumbling block is the tempo change and the bass taking the solo - it's meaningless and boring, like he can't think of anything good to play. I admire anyone who takes on something different, well done and remember that it's the tune being criticised here and not your playing or sound because the guitar sounds great. :)

I think another thing to remember is that whenever you convert a song into an instrumental, knowing the lyrics will affect your appreciation of the melody. I play an instrumental version of Charles Aznavour's 'She', which is a beautiful melody in it's own right but is even more so if you know the original lyrics.

Hello Noel!
Hello Dave!

Thanks to you both, friends!

Dave: Yes I know what you mean about the bass it seems to stop or fragment the melody. Generally the artists that recorded for 4AD label goes to this uncomfortable side, (like Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Lush). Although this, when I began to listen them more and more I found something atractive in all these.

Noel: it's a real challenge when we affoard and original sung one because we have to keep the attention although we worked without lyrics helping us to tell the story. Taling about Charles Aznavour, please give a look of one of my earlier videos Je T'attends from Charles Aznavour, too.

Thanks to you both, again.

Regards,
Marcelo.
