Michael - in the video Paul mentioned the fact that he was using a Shure SM57 dynamic microphone due to the fact that it would be difficult to justify the cost of the expensive Neuman microphones used at Abbey road.
He was positioning the mike to suit the equipment being used - there will probably never be a definative answer to how the microphones were placed at the original Shadows recording sessions.

Roger

My apologies. I now realise my question was ambiguous. I meant had Paul recorded any of his renditions with the microphone off axis?

What I find fascinating is that if I travelled back in time to 1960's Abbey Road on board the Tardis and stood in the recording studio while the tunes were being recorded that they would still not sound quite right. I had always realised that there must have been something done to tame the bridge pickup but until Paul's graphic video it had not occurred to me that there appears to have been quite a bit of equalisation on the bottom end as well.

regards

Hi Michael,
I endorse Roger's comments about mic placements. I had it a fair way off axis for Apache, less so for Wonderful Land and on-axis (i.e. directly in front of the centre of the speaker cone) for Atlantis and Peace Pipe. That is just what worked best for our equipment and for any other set-up the ear is the best judge (though these could be a good starting point). In all cases the amp was driven quite hard to get a richer tone.

Regards,

Paul.

Just back off holiday so only just caught up - Great stuff, the one thing that this footage does for me is blow out of the water the 'Burns theory' regarding the recording of 'Atlantis'. :o

Once again a great video showing how to achieve the sound and well presented.

Few questions though

Did you try using any limiting and or compression after the microphone ? Is there any overdubbing of the guitar part ?
