Hi Dave and Roger,

Thanks for your kind comments.

Dave, yes I hope we have finally put to rest the Atlantis-Burns conspiracy theory!

Roger, other than Atlantis where a lot of compression was used, there was no extra compression added to Peace Pipe or Wonderful Land at the mixing stage and just a bit on the gallop of Apache. However, the TVS3 does give some compression of both the dry and echo signals (the amount depends upon the drive level, just like a Meazzi) and the camera into which the raw mixes were recorded for the video had the usual AVC and brick wall limiter. For that reason the raw audio was also recorded into a PC and the audio of the final mix then added directly to the video in the editing stage and it is that audio that you hear in video 3 of the playing of the final mix and comparisons with The Shadows. There was no overdubbing of the guitar part (but, as i said in the video, Atlantis was recorded in three takes because of the different settings used for the different parts). I think that what is often attributed to overdubbing in Wonderful Land, in particular, is due to the echo signal with wow and flutter recombining with the dry signal.

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Paul

Re overdubbing of the parts I feel sure this was done on many tracks to thicken the sound if only subtly and I feel Apache has it after a good listen. The At Abbey Road album touts several tracks as undubbed versions suggesting they were over dubbed later. I am sure I can hear this but maybe I am wrong but I feel it is there. The limiting I feel would have been in use after the mic and that would also thicken the sound. Just my thoughts on this process mate and again congrats on getting real close to the recordings. The thing I stated in the other thread about Hank lowering the lower E string till it drones was something of note too as HBM makes mention of it himself and thought I would bring that up.

Hi Roger,

I thought that the overdubbing in relation to in the Abbey Road album was in relation to adding strings and occasionally some other orchestral components. There are of course a number of tunes where double tracking is in evidence, such as Foot Tapper and Theme for Young Lovers, for example, but I don't think there was any on the originals of the four tunes we did in video 3 though.

Regards,

Paul.

I agree with you there Paul, although there is evidence on 'Atlantis' of some extra lead guitar on the overelaps between intro and verse.
All in all a great demo though and as close as it gets.

Hi Spiro and the Oz team,

Your achievement will certainly go down in history as the first "Re-Issue" of "That Sound".
Spiro' enthusiasm for the Shadows music and the superb work of Paul and Gary have made it a quantum
contribution to the benefit of the fans.

Thank you,
Abel

Hi Dave, Abel and Geoff

Its nice to hear from you chaps and your comments are much appreciated.

After the response we have had, it makes the effort all that more worthwhile.

Dave:
A lot of people did (some may still) believe that Atlantis was played on a Burns Prototype and I can understand why as both guitars are single coil yet the Burns gets a slightly thicker sound due to its pickups and guitar system.
I did ask Hank a few years back about this and he said it was definitely a Fender so I knew we were on the right track.
I feel Paul's persistence in experimenting with mike placement and compression plug ins, etc.. paid dividends in the long term.

Its not a sound easily attained and it will be interesting to see how it sounds when we do our live demos.
At the moment it could take a few weeks as Gary has commitments with Hank, so I hope everyone can be patient a bit longer.

Cheers
Spike
