Yes, PRS and MCPS exist to make sure that the money gets back, so any new release should lead to composer/arranger royalities for Marvin, Welch, Bennett and the Rostill estate. The Harris and Meehan estates may get a little but some of their compositions were attributed to other names. Performance royalities would go to Marvin and Welch. Not sure about Bennett because I suspect he would have been on session fees during the heyday period. Locking would get almost nothing.

As to Adam Faith... I can only guess that there may have been less archive release of his material to date? Certainly the Shadows stuff has been re-released so often I imagine EMI see no new revenue in it?

That's the whole point Iain. Look at the interest in the "As Good As It Gets" release - EMI could easily do something similar - even with material that's already been released & still generate good sales. Certainly quite a bit of Adam Faith's repertoire has been languishing in the vaults - but, actually, there have been quite a few Adam Faith releases over the past few years. But I think that you're basically correct - EMI basically can't be bothered. It just galls me to see extensive re - packaging of many artists back catalogues who are far and away inferior to the Shadows (in terms of hits, longevity, sales, present day following / popularity etc., etc). Yet....even though EMI can't be bothered to do it themselves...they won't license material either...unless it's ultra straightforward. The Shadows are just about the only major UK act (for example) who don't have a major BBC sessions release. Mind you (which is - whether we agree or not) even more amazing (given how huge his following still is) - Cliff still hasn't had a decent BBC sessions release either. As he's still releasing Top 10 albums even now - EMI couldn't use the excuse that there aren't enough fans / sufficient interest to purchase such a CD. No, the sticking point (yet again) will be the parsimony of the BBC in refusing to pay for use of those same 1958 / 9 - 1963 Bernie Andrews (now property of John Beecher ) Cliff / Shads tapes. Personally I just hope that John Beecher releases as much material from 1959 / 1960 / 1961 ASAP- while the copyright restrictions (currently still 50 years) still allow it.

Bests.....Rob :)

You can bet that this will be the case with the record companies - as when Elvis Presley died, and someone remarked...'Good career move...'

There won't be any rarities on it though because EMI don't know what they have in the vaults.
The tapes were logged into the vaults by, and I have to be careful here, people whose understanding of the English language was questionable and as a result many of them were perhaps lost or wrongly identified over the years. I was told that by employees at EMI in the early nineties.
EMI hold Shadows session tapes from 1960 up to the late 70s but so many are missing or destroyed.
For example, the actual session tapes for Apache, Man of Mystery, Quatermassters and many others are not showing on the tape report, yet they kept hold of outtakes for Golden Street, Gonzales, Big Boy and many others. Why?

When you begin to find out how they operate it's laughable but sad at the time, and with all that clout as a major record label in the 1960s how could it all have gone so wrong? It is the way the company handles its business and the stupid policies it creates for potential licensees. I've no sympathy at all.

On behalf of all Shadows fans, may I offer a huge thanks to all who have attempted to loosen the shackles on the EMI archives. We must all hope that the new regime at EMI see sense and allow official releases of whatever remains locked away. Maybe if EMI goes to the wall, the administrators will be only too pleased to take whatever is offered for a fast diminishing asset.

"I mean, Cliff Bennett for example!!!! Again, no disrespect to Cliff Bennett - he's a great singer. But.....consider his EMI career - "One Way Love", "Got To Get You Into My Life" (plus one other minor single and one minor chart album). How wide can his fan base be nowadays....yet he was treated to the complete EMI recordings release scenario. Again, so why not the Shadows??"

I would love to hear anything by Cliff Bennett with Micky King playing guitar in the band, a very fine guitarist indeed whom I saw many times at the Big Beat Club Harrow in James Royal & the Hawks.

It's strange that theres so much unreleased material still in the vaults as if you read the notes on the CD 'Everything of value' we were led to assume that there was nothing else left worth releasing. The master tapes must have been stored in the wrong parts of the vaults.
I'd love to hear some of the unreleased tracks such as 'Life on Mars' and isn't there a track called 'Blues in an unfurnished flat'?

I would love to have a CD of all the EMI unreleased stuff. Can't persuade the Shadows management to speak to EMI? I sent an email to Brian Goodes office at Outrider Mangement Ltd to ask about Hank's tour, and I got a reply. It's worth a try. Email guitarhits@aol.com.

With the session tapes you mean the raw unedited tapes? The analogue master tapes of the released versions are I'm sure correctly filed, as are the digital remasters of all?

It's not a private email but a business email address for the mangement office. Rather than jus complain about EMI we should email the management and ask them to try and do something.
