I enjoyed that,Rog!!
The Lead break at the end was really excellent - how one gets a keyboard to emulate those bends and slides is beyond me. Brill!!
cheers

Hi Roger

Can I be Simon Cowell and buck the trend ??? I didn't like it ...... Although midi programming is very clever and is getting better and better, this still sounds like a club organist from the 80's and nothing like Dire Straits or Knopfler. It's not a criticism of you Roger as MIDI is beyond me and I wouldn't know where to start with something like that, it's more that that cheesy sound that MIDI seems to thrive on - you hear so many solo singers using midi files as backing tracks ...... :(

sorry to be a grumpy old git - just not my cup o'tea

now where's me tin hat ...........

cheers
mark.

No worries Mark I actually have some reservations myself as it is not like the real thing. But as you say it is getting better just like say amp modelling is. In fairness I never listened to the original or did this file as a proper mix on instruments and so on. I did over 70 files in a few weeks just to see how MIDI performed on some classic tunes and have to say some of them do impress me.

In the end it is how you get the part recorded that makes the difference and the MIDI controller is important. Such as say a MIDI guitar controller for guitar parts rather than trying to tap it in on a piano style keyboard. Last time I looked at MIDI before I bought my Korg Keyboard I was not really impressed at all but in 10-15yrs it has come along a lot. Some people have been enthusiastic about some of these files and some remarked that this file was better than some of the other Karaoke and backings out there so I feel justified in having a go. I feel they can be improved upon and really I view these only as basic sound tests to get a feel for the possiblities.

I like my new keyboard and its sounds and I believe the guitar parts in MIDI have often been hard to crack. Here Mark K guitar style and nuances seem to be captured but the tone is not the same as the record so I still feel this is a great improvement on the MIDI that was.

Will it ever replace the real thing.... No not yet at least. But to have all those instruments in a box is wonderful and opens up all sorts of musical adventures.
