Demos of Ecca's / Piet's Etap

Just heard the two most recent demos. Apache is awsome and The Savage is spectacular !!! At least I think so.

I remember some six, seven, eight years ago whene everyone was occupied with nailing the sound of Apache, and I remember you Dave experimenting tirelessly and making dozens of demos with various echo units, and strings, and even guitars . . . ) Now it is so easy !! What would our dear friend Roberto say if he could only hear this version of Apache on this inexpensive and at first glance modest, yet quite amazing little machine ?

Thanks Bojan, it is indeed a modest price for something that would have stood the test of Shadowmania!

On the Shadowmania videos you can see and hear an ESE Echomatic VI, Meazzi, Atlantis and of course Danny's Magicstomp and I can say hand on heart that this piece of kit equals anything I heard from any of those. I want to try it live, but will have to wait until we have a full line up un stage, unfortunately we are down to the basic three piece tonight so an echo unit for the guitarist isn't something that takes priority, but I look forward to trying it tomorrow.

First, hats off to Piet for this amazing product that is the result of what he calls his "labor of love" but in fact represents many, many years of research and hard work. And then he makes it readily available to everyone with no profit for himself. What a guy !!! I am an avid and long-time user of his amazing eTAP2 vst plugin, but this is even better !!!

Second, great job Ecca, your version is the one I'd like to have!!

Last but not least, excellent choice of songs Dave, great playing, and awesome sound !!

Well said Bojan I too wish to thank Piet for all his efforts and this is a wonderful unit very well priced.

What would our dear friend Roberto say if he could only hear this version of Apache on this inexpensive and at first glance modest, yet quite amazing little machine ?

Thanks for that Bojan, but it's only easy now because of all the frustrating times with those experiments and what was learned from doing them.

I can give you two main factors that I believe made the difference, the main one being the use of the volume control on the Strat. I always insisted on having the volume on my Strat full on, because when rolled back it made the sound 'wooly'. It wasn't until I bought the 54 Masterbuilt Strat that I heard the beautiful tone it produced with the volume rolled back to 8 or 9 , which took the 'spike' out of the tone and rounded it off the the desired treble response. I later bought an Eric Johnson Strat and the same applied, which led me to removing the pots from my old Strat and re-fitting with the same type that were on the Eric Johnson & Masterbuilt guitars - problem solved.

The other factor was discovering and acquiring a Vox AC15 Heritage and hearing the EF86 channel which hit me between the eyes with what everyone perceives as THAT SOUND. I immediately purchased Roger Alcock's Vintage Unit for my AC 30 and never looked back. Any echo machine I have used has sounded 'right' with this type of amp and with the use of the volume control on the Strat I have had little trouble achieving a pleasing Hank sound.

I have now taken this to the computer and have figured out how to do it on the Macbook Pro using the Vox amps in Logic or Garageband, which is how I did these recordings, only using the Etap in the signal chain before it hit the virtual Vox amp.

Through not understanding the gear I had, I put myself through many years of anguish thinking that the guitar volume had to be turned up to the max, simply because my volume pot was not giving the desired tone when reduced, it was possibly knackered, but I didn't know that. The effect of it being full on makes the sound a tad 'spiky' and some folks used to comment that my sound was too hard or trebly. Happily I found out why and since then have enjoyed the journey.
The good news is that it has now become a 'no brainer' to achieve satisfactory results, as Bojan says above.

Just had a blast in the studio through an amp and it sounds terrific - I'm going to try it at the gig tonight.

That's good of you, I had no idea that who this guy was or what he was doing, I understood that the Etap was for PC users only - what a revelation !

Dave, Piet Verbruggen has had the eTAP2 vst plugin for years . . . and I have been using it to my absolute satisfaction along with many other people here. That is the only echo unit I use. Then Piet decided to make a hardware version of his eTAP2, hence the HW in the name.

Here is the link showing every step of his design and construction process. This guy knows what he is doing !! It is worth scrolling down and browsing through this fascinating stuff just to get an idea of how brilliant his project is . . .
