Able to make BT with a "voice killer"?

Postby ernie1958 » 05 Oct 2009, 18:34

8-) Hey guys...kinda curious here...reading about all those wonderful backing tracks some have made and with great results I might add.
I was wondering..in the past I've had the opportunity to work with a little machine called a "voice killer".It's purpose was to take an original recording
of a song and "take out" the lead vocal in it so you could fill this in yourself, kinda like the BT people use to fill in their own lead guitar part.
So now here's the bottom line...maybe this also could be done somehow with some kind of hard/software to achieve the same results for making
backing tracks for let's say our mutual love for the Shads tunes? The way I see it is you could have the original Shads tracks but then without Hank's
lead so you can fill in the lead guitar part yourself...
It's not sacrilige as some purists might want to say but imo just an easier way of achieving the ORIGINAL Shads backing.I've heard some people
actually using some original material from the Shads by recording left or right, depending on where the drums, rhythm guitar and bass are,and then
finally switch to mono for the end result...and there you have it..an original Shads BT played by the Shads themselves..

Maybe some thoughts to dwell on?? Let's hear some!!

Cheers,
Ernie

Hi, Ernie,

It more or less works. But you need to use a stereo file with the lead "voice" right in the middle. Check your CD collection for classic instrumentals from the early 1960s which conform to those requirements.

Using (say) "centre cancel" or "vocal cancel" (in Audition or its clone Audacity) will output a mono file without the centre information, albeit still displaying a ghostly impression of the centre information via an aura of stereo reverb (now rendered in glorious mono).

Hi there,

I`m new here so please be patient in case I`m not used to some things and my English is not too good.

Reading about noise killer- I can offer backing tracks for "Jigsaw" ( a little noisy,) "Trains and boats and planes", and "The Rise and fall of Fingle Bunt".

I managed to wipe out the lead guitar from the orignal vinyl- records because this 3 tunes were recorded in a way, that I could do it on "audacity". I tried others with which it didn´t work.

If you want to listen how the BTs sound completely with my added lead, you may listen to my "youtube"- channel "burnsernst" and you can find them on the playlist Shadows tunes.

In case you want to have the BT I need your e-mail adress to send it mp3 file.

You are very welcome Ernst.

Can anybody recommend decent "Voice Killer" software . . . I fancy having a play?

Thanks in anticipation.
