The poor b*****d just doesn't get it - probably can't tell the difference between a crotchet and a hatchet . . . . . . or a B flat and a block of flats . . . . .

The point is, it is the tone (which is according to him ' non existent) of those instruments that allow them to work in the context of the tracks that he is asking us to listen to . . . .

It is true though that the tone of each individual instrument, when heard on its own, is not quite what you hear from that instrument when it is part of the overall mix. Some frequencies get lost, making others prominent. I'd say tone does exist, but you have to tweak it in the context of the whole band - and the venue - and the volume at which you're playing.
