Chain Reaction (Shadows cover) video

Postby Phil McGarrick » 12 Feb 2015, 19:21

"Chain Reaction" is a melodic R&B song, sung by Diana Ross, and written by the Bee Gees, who also provided the backing vocals for the single. The track was released on the album Eaten Alive in 1985 and as a single twice - in 1985 and again in 1986.

My Cover is based on The Shadows version on their 1987 album “Simply Shadows”
(My 5th cover to date from this great album.)

A Cleverly written song in my opinion with 8 key changes (up and down).

The Backing track came from here :- http://www.musicbackingtracks.co.uk/tracks/detail/341
With a lot of modifications to the Key,Timings, order, and lengthened to match The Shadows version (modified by my son Andrew)

I used my Alan Brason Strat with Kinman FV-HMS pickups on bridge position for the main tune.
My Fender 56NOS with Kinman 54 Impersonators V3 on Bridge/middle pickup with mix pot of the K7 harness set at 1 for the 2nd guitar ending.
Both through an Alesis Quadraverb Q2 programmed with echoes from the past (EFTP) patch 0-36 and into Cubase SX5 on the computer.

Video made with 3xSony SR12 Cam Corders and a smart phone for the headstock
views.Edited in Sony Vegas Pro 9.

Thanks for watching :-)

I really think that Barry Gibb in particular has been hugely underrated as a truly influential songwriter over the 20th and 21st centuries - over many genres, over many years - and with many artists. A real pity that he is the final one left of a truly gifted family of brothers... I would really loved to have seen him live and to have met him - he seems a real gentleman.

So I love this tune Phil! Always a very silky performance from you and really great timing - very consistently excellent... Nice trick with the 'neckcam' for the vid - although left me a little dizzy!!

I notice that your top 3 bridge saddles on the Brason are set significantly back from the bass 3? Intonation issues?

Also - I didn't want to mention the ASBO tag on your wrist... Just be home before sunset...

Great tune from a really great player.

My best to you.

Greetings from Egremont! A bit parky here!
Another Winner!
Superb sound and great picking.
The sound of the Impersonators vs the FVs is very interesting.
Loved the video - very educational.
Cheers

Hi Tony - You're confusing an ASBO tag for my GPS tracker - have to wear this so the wife can track me when I wander off. Lol
Many thanks for the nice comments - I agree with you about the Bee-Gees song writing - I particularly like the way the Key changes go down as well as up in this song. Most key changes are just up.
The Headstock video was just an idea someone suggested and just uses my existing phone so gives another perspective.
Hope all is well with you in Johannesburg.

Hi Ian - Holidays again ! Cumbria in winter could be a cold one!
Many thanks for commenting on this one - I tried to get the tone of the Impersonators as far away from the HMS pickups as I could by using the mixer pot and 2 pickup selector. On the Shads version I think the main tune at the end is played on keyboards and the 2nd guitar sounds more like a telecaster. I think my next guitar from Alan Brason will be a telecaster as I always regret selling my 1960's one ! Always good to hear from you.

Hi Fred - Thank you very much for your support always appreciated very glad you like this one.

All the best... Phil

Thanks very much Gary - glad you liked this one - I got this tune in my head after the last one I recorded as this is only 2 tracks further on the same CD and if I left it running would end up listening to this one. Lol

All the best to you... Phil
