I seem to recall reading somewhere that Don Storer, Cherry Wainers husband had played drums
on an occasion for the Drifters, maybe one of their early 1959 gigs between Terry Smart and Tony Meehan?

Just found
http://www.thehi-fis.co.uk
1959. 17th January. Cheam Public Baths on the same bill with Cliff Richard and The Drifters. “Move It” was number 1 in the charts and we learnt to play it, also the B side “Apron Strings”. We performed this on stage and The Drifters were behind the drawn curtains setting up. They were not amused, as they turned up their amps and made a racket, to register their disgust that a support band should play one of their songs. Anyway it did not result in trouble and they actually remarked how good we did it. What a sound they made on stage, it was fabulous. We were amazed, because Jet Harris had a 4 foot square speaker cabinet to put the bass through, it purred. The following day Len Ford & Malcolm Wright set about making one for us, we put 4 x 18inch speakers in ours. It not only improved our sound, it also doubled up as seat rest in the back of the van and stopped all the other gear moving forwards when braking.

Vielen Dank Heinz! Vielleicht schaffen wir es ja doch noch irgendwann einmal eine vollständige Liste zusammenzustellen.

These guys certainly worked hard on these touring dates 58-60
I didn't know they had done 6 consecutive nights at the old Glasgow Empire a few times.
O.K. shorter top of the bill performing segments, but still twice a night, most likely to
fairly packed houses is still impressive nevertheless.
Many thanks to Ulrich for all his excellent work and detail

According to The Shadows By Themselves, during that early 1960 US tour, Johnny and the Hurricanes spent their time on the tour bus teasing the boys about sounding too much like American groups! Of course, Apache was still in the future at that time, but it's easy to imagine they were probably actually serious with their bantering.

Heinz,
danke für die zusätzlichen Informationen, ich werde sie ins nächste Update einbeziehen.

Stuart, Iain and Mike,
Many thanks! I am glad that I am not the only 'nut' who is interested in these details.

As time allows I will continue with 1961, 1962 ...

Have a nice weekend,

Ulrich

Apparently men love lists - including me!

Keep up the good work Ulrich.
