Al Casey was part of the "Recording Rebels" as they were termed in 1958 but not part of the "official" touring line up.
As you could imagine people did come & go especially in the early days but I'm with Pete on this with it being Niki.........

We're going to have to agree to differ on this one!

Agreed that Dave Campbell was the usual bass player for the 'Travelling Rebels' (he did the UK tour in the spring of 1960, for example - see my article on p.24 of Pipeline magazine No.97), but Al Casey did some 'travelling' too.

Apart from the fact that Niki Sullivan wore glasses, what other evidence is there?

Al Casey "could" have been there in'58

Going by appearance, Niki is skinnier than Al & parts his hair differently & his classes are a different style to the ones Al is wearing in the two pics you posted..............so that says to me it is Niki in the pic.

Am I 100% certain, of course not

It might help if we knew what tour that pic was taken on, or was it one of the big New York concerts of that time ?

I'll post it on Duane's Gretsch page & see what they think over there

I seem to remember that when The Crickets toured the UK in 1962 that Joe B Maudlin had left The Crickets by then an Jerry Allison had been called up for the US army due to the Cuban missile crisis the line up I remember was, Sonny Curtis, Gerry Naylor ,and Glen D Hardin. Also Phil Everly toured solo as Don was taken ill and returned to America he was married at the time to British actress Venitia Stevenson

Hi,Does anybody know if the Crickets toured over here in around 64 or 65 with a line up of Jerry Alison, Sonny Curtis,and Glenn Harding on piano,no bass player.I recall seeing this line up , at a local hall not a mainstream theatre,but cannott recall the year.Regards Strat21

I've had confirmation from Duane Eddy that Al Casey was not on this tour & it is indeed Niki in the pic.
Fortunately the programme for that tour (signed by everybody) is still in Duane's possession & Deed (his wife) is going to look it out & confirm the other people as there seems some confusion about the person seated on the floor with back to camera

Think they toured UK in late 62 with line up of Sonny Curtis, Glen D Hardin, and Jerry Naylor vocals.
They can be seen performing a couple of numbers in the 63 pop film Just For Fun, with the addition
of Don Groom from the Outlaws on drums.
Jet& Tony also appeared in this same b/w feature, so probably the mimed footage was shot at the same
time i.e. late 62 early63.

Thanks, Dick. Somehow I was hoping it would be Al - he never seems to get enough credit for what was achieved in those early days.

The DVD of 'The Wrecking Crew' is now available and this does give credit to Al for the time when he was a member of that group of 'first call' LA studio musicians in the sixties. It's a double-DVD and on DVD2 there are extended interviews, including Al telling the real story of Ramrod.

Hello again from 'downunder'.
I've just watched my copy of the 'Wrecking Crew' DVD and it's a great insight into the work of that wonderful band of
L.A. session musicians. Think of a West Coast US hit from the 60's - early 70's and there's a very good chance that
members of the 'crew' played on it. Do yourself a favour and find a copy - you won't be disappointed.
And I'm not being paid to say that!! I loved it.
